How to : Find Art Thieves

Journal Entry: Thu Jan 3, 2013, 12:12 PM
Please :+fav: this journal, so that a lot of people can read it.

I noticed that a lot of people don't know how to search for their photos on the internet, so here is a short tutorial. Unfortunately there isn't much you can do about art thieves, but i still think it is important to look out for them.

1. visit Google.com

2. Go to the page of the photo you want to search and click "show image"

3. Copy the Link and paste it into google.

4. This page should open, click "search by image".

5. Now you can browse trough the results.

6. The less results the happier you should be.

EDIT : You can also use websites like : tineye.com and iqdb.com
This was pointed out to me by some people, personally i have no experience with them, but i am sure that they work too. :aww:

This is very useful and kinda short ^^; I would have put a lot of unnecessary explination! But it serves its purpose :) Also, I will look at your works when I can... I am quite busy with my folders :hmm:

Go to images.google.com
You should see a logo of a camera in the right of the search box.
Click on it and attach the photo you want to find.
Search.
There will be results.

What really bugs me is when people steal artwork and put a white/black border around it - it stops the image from coming up on these kinds of searches but it's still stealing...

Another phrase that might appear is "open image", typically right click will get that menu to come up that has that option.

The best way to deal with these sites is to join them yourself. That way your driving traffic to your galleries. It would also be good to start your own website instead of relying on DA. Its a.lot less of a headache then chaseing down every site stealing your art.

Nice! I tried the Google way but that was talking ages so I had a look onto Google Chrome webstore and there was a neat extension that works once you right click on an image and a button saying "search with Google images" appears. A lot faster than doing it manually.

It had been a while since I last checked my images, and when I did this check again, it upset me quite a lot. I found my work being used on other sites without my permission - and some even had the nerve to remove my watermark and place something different.
I really wish this wouldn't happen, it is very disrespectful to the owner of the artwork.

Thanks for posting this though, it reminded me to do a search!

I can't believe I never thought to do this before. Found some kids using one of my pieces to make custom pokemon cards or something. Another dude was using something from my gallery as his avatar on a Call of Duty forum. I ain't even mad though, I just thought it was funny and kind of flattering.

Should be noted though that most of the results I found were not art theft. Many of them were indirect links to my own gallery image from people's favorites, groups the image was submitted to, and journal features. I just want to caution people against jumping the gun and screaming someone's ear off who's only crime was adding your image to their favorites.

:{ Yes but once my art was deleted from deviantART and I was reported for stolen artwork because I had also posted it on my pixiv account with a japanese title and they thought I had stolen it from myself.... Even though my username is the same on both accounts. OTL

You may want to remind people that google also searches for your image on other people's pages such as having been Favorited by another person or it's also showing it can show up on "More like this" page. So they need to keep in mind not only does it show and tell stolen images but when the image is Favorited or can be searched by another method.

I have my hand full with an art thief right now. I sent in the evidence and I'm waiting to find out about it. She stole art from people on this site, she's been here for 2 months, and claims some as her own. Almost all of her pics are stolen and it's really frustrating

Use the view image button, copy the link to google images and when it says it cant display it click show image instead and it'll pop right up!

Hope that helps!

((Thanks! Though I kind of figured it out after I asked the question. I was a bit impulsive. :( Sorry for being annoying but again, thanks! I actually clicked "copy image URL" and it works too, and I did click "display results for images" or whatever on Google. Luckily none of my art was stolen! (Probably because it's poop) :XD:

To be honest, I don't have a view image button. Just wondering.))

I decided to google my best work on google ( [link] )

And I came up with two pages of results. ([link])

However, only search one shows the actual picture not posted by me, and it's most of an inspiration album than actual theft. [link]

The rest of them are false alarms. The picture doesn't match the name. That means it's recommended that people click on every link just to make sure it's not a real theft and it's just google being a derp.

I found my art along with a lot of other artists on a forum, in a huge topic for "final fantasy art you did not draw". When I asked my art to be removed, the guy was pretty snotty about it and said "if you don't want your work to be stolen, don't post it on the internet". I hate kids like that.

Here's the topic, probably a couple hundred images in there: [link]

If you recognize any of the artists, contact them. I already contacted GlassShard/Ashley Cope and she said she was okay with it.
